What it is
Mundan, also called the first haircut, is a samskara usually done in the first or third year, sometimes at a shrine the family trusts. The muhurat is the time the hair is cut, not the time you leave home. This page lists daytime windows for that act across the year, using the city where the haircut will happen.
Mumbai loads first. If you will do the mundan at a temple in another city, switch the city so the panchang matches that temple sunrise. Parents often combine the trip with a holiday. The calendar can reject a convenient school holiday if the tithi or the star is poor, and that is the point of checking.
Which rules are applied
Allowed tithis are Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, and Trayodashi. Allowed weekdays are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The nakshatra list for mundan is shorter than for naming. It includes Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, and Dhanishta. A harsh yoga removes the hour.
Shared blocks are Kharmas while the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena, Adhik maas, Bhadra, Rahu Kaal, Amavasya, and the combustion of Guru and Shukra. Panchak is not applied to mundan here, and Chaturmas is not applied either. Do not assume a mundan date is also a wedding date. The star lists are not the same.
How to use the list
Look at the child age your family regards as right, then open that year and month. A window of a few hours is enough for the cut, the bath, and a short prayer. You do not need the entire afternoon unless many relatives will perform a longer rite. If the row is split by Rahu Kaal, finish before the break or start after it. Do not let the scissors run across the gap.
The reason line shows the tithi and the star so you can tell the temple office what you are relying on. If they only give you a numbered slot, compare that slot with the window before you accept it. A slot outside the window is outside this rule set even if the date itself looks shubh in the morning.
Carry a light cloth for the cut hair and decide in advance who will perform the cut. A long argument at the shrine eats the window. If the child is frightened, a shorter rite inside the same window is better than a perfect speech that runs into Rahu Kaal. The list cares about the hour of the cut, not about how many relatives held the scissors.
What this list does not decide
Health comes before the star. Do not schedule a haircut over fever, a fresh vaccination, or a scalp irritation just because the panchang is clean. The finder cannot see the child chart, the birth nakshatra to avoid, or a family vow tied to a particular shrine.
If you want the hour matched to the birth chart, ask Dr. Gajanan Sangle for a personal mundan muhurat and send the month you filtered. The dates here remain a general classical list. Read them with the disclaimer, and do not treat them as a medical or religious command.
FAQ
Is Jyeshtha used for mundan?
Yes on this list. Jyeshtha is one of the stars classically allowed for the first haircut, even though it is avoided for several other rites.
Can I do mundan in Kharmas if the temple is free?
Kharmas days are excluded. Sun in Dhanu or Meena removes the windows even when the weekday is Monday or Thursday.
Does the birth nakshatra get avoided automatically?
No. This year list does not know the child chart. Avoiding the birth star is part of a personal muhurat.
Are Sundays shown?
No. Sunday is outside the weekday set used for mundan here. Ask a priest if your shrine only offers Sunday.
